Set and Achieve Goals – 3 Things to Avoid 3 Things to Do

3 Things to Avoid

Vagueness – As long as a goal is hazy and fuzzy then there is no chance of you achieving it. When you do not have your target clearly defined then you don’t have a goal. You will start, stop and eventually move on to something else. It is a mistake to settle for a broad objective. Being vague on what you want to accomplish leads to frustration and failure.

Distractions – In an average day there are more tasks to do than we have time to do them. And there is always something else being added to our list of things to do. We lie in bed at night feeling like all we have done is put out fires all day. With all that we have going on how can we stay focused on our goals?

Quitting – Giving up too soon is a tragic, yet common mistake that people make when striving to hit their goals and they meet with seemingly relentless opposition. It is easier to stop than it is to keep fighting with no visible signs of success. It feels like there is no use trying any more because the goal is not going to be hit anyway.

What to Do

Be Specific – Clearly define your goals. Narrow your focus. If you want to lose weight then set your goal for the amount of weight that you want to lose. Be specific when you set the intention. You need to be very clear on what you intend the successful completion of your goal to look like. It is easier to make plans for a goal that is specific. With your target clearly defined you will recognize when you are off track and then you can readjust accordingly.

Write It - Write your goals down. Make a plan. Map out everything that you feel needs to be done in order for you to hit your goal. Remember, the written word is sharper than the best memory. When you write your goals down and look at them throughout the day they rise to prominence in your life. The more you look at your goals then the more you will think of them. They will become more important to you. No longer will your goals continue to be put on the back burner. They will become a solid fixture in your day to day affairs. You will gain focus that you never had before. You will find yourself doing what it takes to hit your goals first. Everything else becomes secondary in importance.

Persist – Fight on even when you get tired and weary. Change your approach, but don’t quit. Once you embark on the completion of your goal develop a dogged determination to do what it takes to finish what you started. Do not focus on how hard it is. Instead keep your mind on the expectation of receiving what you want.
