Goals – The 3 Most Common Mistakes Made When Setting Your Goals

By Anthony D Carter

Not setting a goal. This is the most common of all the goal setting mistakes. When you don’t set goals you put your self at the mercy of everyday circumstances and challenges. There is always something to grab your attention, efforts and time. You get things done, but without a goal you are not necessarily doing the activities that you truly want to do.

Solution: Always live your life with clearly identified goals. Have a purpose for your day, week, month and year. You will accomplish more and feel more fulfilled if you strive to always live your life with goals.

Setting the wrong goal. Setting the wrong goal leads to frustration and disappointment. After doing large amounts of work and spending vast amounts of time you discover you are pursuing something that does not fit with your true desires. You may even hit your goal only to realize it was a waste of time because you didn’t really want what you ended up with.

Solution: Give your goal setting some serious thought. Have solid reasons for attempting your goals. Make them significant. They should fit within your overall desires in life.

Setting a goal that is too big. When you set a goal that is beyond your reach you set yourself up for failure. You learn in the middle of pursuing your big goal that you are not prepared to accomplish that goal yet. Your confidence suffers and you become hesitant towards setting new goals because you failed so miserably at your latest attempt.

Solution:You don’t have to aim so high that you set yourself up for failure. Instead work your way up to the big goal. Hit smaller goals first. As you hit these smaller goals your confidence will actually grow. You will be able to stretch yourself more and more until you are eventually be within range of your big goal.

As you hit your smaller goals you should be moving progressively closer in range to your big goal. This way when you do go for it you will not feel like you are starting from square one. Instead you will feel like you have been accomplishing your main goal while you were successfully hitting your secondary goals.
