Goal Setting – Three Common Mistakes

By Anthony D Carter

Goal setting can help you achieve great things. However there are certain mistakes that people often make which trip them up before they get started good. Here are some of those mistakes and some solutions for dealing with them.

Too Big. When your goals are too big you get overwhelmed and you quickly lose confidence. You no longer believe that you can hit your goal because no matter how much you get done there is still so much remaining to be done.

Solution: Break your big goal up into several manageable sized goals. Each time you hit one of the smaller goals move on to the next one in line. After you hit all of these smaller goals you will achieve the successful results that you wanted from your original big goal.

Not Specific. When your goal is vague it is the same as not having a goal. It is impossible to successfully hit it because it is not well defined. You will feel like you are failing the whole time you are attempting to hit this fuzzy goal.

Solution: Sharpen your focus. Make your goal very specific. Get a definitive objective. Make it something that you can clearly identify. Define your target is so clearly that you could tell someone what it is in one sentence and they would understand it easily.

Not Written. When your goal is not written down it is easily forgotten. It is hard to remember a goal that you cannot see on a regular basis. Our normal day to day living makes it hard to keep track of our goals if we do not have them written down so we can readily read them.

Solution: Write out a statement which list exactly what your the successful accomplishment of your goal will look like. Then write your goals down on 4X5 index cards and place them where you can see them throughout your day. Read your goal cards regularly to etch your desire into your mind.
