4 Tips For Successful Goal Setting
By Anthony D Carter
Setting your goals involves several steps. If done right goal setting all but guarantees your getting what you want. Here are four tips for successful goal setting.
Make it believable. Set goals which you believe you can do the work to achieve. The goal itself my seem monumental, but the steps to accomplish it need to be doable. If you can see yourself doing the tasks then your goal is possible to you.
Write it down. Put your goals down on paper. List the work and the goal. If you are going to lose 50 pounds in 6 months write that down. If today were December 30, 2009 you would write, “As of June 30, 2010 I have lost 50 pounds.” Write your goal down on a card and carry it around with you. This is a way of reminding yourself that it is important to you. Pull the card out throughout the day and read it. Every time you do this you reinforce the target in your mind.
Put a date on it. A date gives you a deadline. It gives you a sense of urgency. Without a date your goal is just a wish. It is just something that it would be nice to have. When you put a date on it you tell yourself you are going to accomplish it. A date helps you focus all of you energy on successfully accomplishing your goal at a certain time. This gives you added motivation.
Set 3 types. You should maintain three different levels for your goals. One should be the minimum. Another level should be the stretch. And the third type should be the ultimate. The minimum is the least that you want to achieve. The stretch is minimum plus a little bit more. The ultimate level would be phenomenal to you. If you were to hit your goal at the ultimate level than you would have done the minimum plus a great deal more. You will be content to hit the goal at either of these levels, but of course you would be thrilled if you exceeded your original objective.
